Ashford

The scenic village of Ashford is home to the famous Mount Usher Gardens. It is a charming area with breathtaking scenery within minutes.  Ashford has an interesting selection of places to stay and an array of activities to partake in. On the doorstep of Devil’s Glen, there are lovely walks both by the river and higher up the glen.

Ashford is home to Sculpture in Woodland, which is a beautiful area, that features a unique collection of contemporary sculptures by Irish and international artists.

Roundwood

A short distance from Ballyduff Old Schoolhouse is the Roundwood Vartry Reservoir.  There are a number of beautiful trails around the reservoir with thriving wildlife, flora, fauna and mountain views.  Combined, there are nearly 20km of trails for all to enjoy!

Between 1862 and 1868, Lower Vartry Reservoir was formed by constructing a dam across the valley of the river Vartry.  To provide additional storage, a second dam was completed in 1923 forming the Upper Reservoir.  Both dams are earthen embankments with waterproof cores and have stone facings  on the upstream slopes to prevent wave erosion.

Devils Glen

In close proximity to the Old Schoolhouse is Devil’s Glen which boasts a dramatic landscape that was fashioned at the end of the Ice Age when the melt waters of the ice sheet created the valley. The resultant gorge affords a swift decent for the Vartry River as it makes its way from the Vartry Reservoir to nearby Ashford village. T
